Gael García Bernal Biography:

With the kind of good looks that would make any girl's mother nervous, Gael Garcia Bernal had been acting for years in Mexico before his breakout performance in "Amores Perros" (2000).

Bernal was born in Guadalajara to actor parents who often included their tawny-skinned, light-eyed son in their theatrical productions. He was cast in the Mexican soap opera "El Abuelo y Yo" at the age of 12, along with his future "Y Tu Mama" co-star Diego Luna. Four years later, Bernal was cast as a quiet and timid milk boy whose friends go on a sexual adventure without him in "De tripas, corzon" (1996). Bernal acted in other short films and continued theater productions until he moved to London on his own at the age of 17. Halfway through his studies at noted acting school, the Central School of Speech and Drama in London, Bernal returned to Mexico to film "Amores Perros" for director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu.

"Amores Perros (Love's a Bitch)" was a critical success and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Film. Bernal's portrayal of an emotionally scarred teenager who is in love with his brother's pregnant wife was heralded as a skillful and soulful performance and Bernal's career had taken off. He received a fair amount of media attention and offers for bigger budget films and had small parts in several major movies, playing alongside Harvey Keitel and Penelope Cruz. But his next seminal role would come when famed Mexican director Alfonso Cuaron saw a rough cut of "Amores Perros" and offered Bernal one of two leads in the Mexican coming of age odyssey "Y Tu Mama Tambien (And Your Mother Too)."(2002) The movie would solidify Bernal as a serious actor and a rising star. The chemistry between Bernal and Luna carried the film, which was a story of two friends and their road trip together with an older woman. The antics between the two boys and the passion exuding from all the characters gave an almost majestic quality to the film and the manner in which it explored the last journey out of adolescence. The chemistry is no surprise as Bernal and Luna really have been lifelong friends and shared many of the same types of experiences the boys in the film did, such as smoking their first joint together. As Bernal continues to accept challenging roles in ever-increasingly high profile films, he is poised to prove to the world, along with any nervous mothers, that depth and substance lie behind his devilishly handsome face and piercing green-brown eyes.

Also in 2002, Bernal starred as an ordained priest in "The Crime of Father Amaro." As Father Amaro, Bernal's character finds himself in love with a sixteen year-old girl, and soon involves himself in a passionate relationship, discovering that he is not the only priest in the parish that is struggling with the tempting sins of the world.
